Small to Mid-size Businesses

Accounting, management, and public practice expertise that you need

30 years of providing personalized services to small and mid-sized businesses

I believe that small and medium-sized businesses are significant drivers of our economy and that they deserve sound, up-to-date technical expertise in accounting and related services. Often smaller operations don’t have the need for full-time accounting staff and so they suffer by just not having access to what they need. My goal is to partner with you in order to provide that financial assistance and to free you up to do what you do best, that is, run your business.

Accounting and Bookkeeping Services

As a business owner, you might not have the workload or finances to hire a full-time accountant. You likely don’t have time to learn accounting or to do the job yourself – that’s where I come in! I can come to you or I can work from my office. I have the technical knowledge to give you a foundation of good record keeping providing you with valuable information on the performance and growth of your business. Why do you need precise record-keeping? Because tax audits are stressful. If you hand the auditor a shoebox of receipts they are not going to be happy. I can provide the record-keeping that you need, to keep you stress-free at tax time. You also want the best information about your business operations. Without good information, you can’t make the right decisions for your business’s future. Whether you need services on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis, I provide client-specific assistance that ensures bookkeeping is appropriately completed. This gives you the financial reports and advice to grow your business. From your complete, accurate and timely bookkeeping records and financial statements, I can assist you with upcoming business decisions. If you want accounting support that is done right the first time, then contact me today to discuss how I can help.

Tax Services

All companies are required to file an annual tax return, even if they are not operating. Some of the required returns are:

  • Corporate income tax (T2)
    Good and Services Tax (GST/HST)
    Payroll remittances and T4 reporting
    Personal income tax (T1)
  • I will communicate all filing requirements and deadlines so you can minimize tax burdens as much as possible and plan accordingly.

This will keep more money in your pocket and less with the tax agencies. I find that preparing your personal tax return takes a fraction of the time you would spend doing it yourself because I am familiar with the operations and tax planning of your company. I am here to support you and your business all year long… not just at corporate yearend.

Software Support

Are you using Sage 50 (Simply) or QuickBooks? Great! Both are solid, tried and true software providers to small businesses. Much like people though, software programs are only as good as the information that they are given. If your bookkeeping software is not giving you the information that you need then I can fix that. I have used Sage 50 (Simply) extensively and am also a QuickBooks ProAdvisor. This means that I can effectively review your software setup to ensure that transactions are classified correctly and reports produced are giving you accurate information. A brand new company? not sure what you need? I can help there as well. After a short chat about your prospective business activities, I can set up your software so that right from the start you get what you need to track your business transactions and provide you with accurate financial information. Or perhaps your company is outgrowing the functionality of your current software? I am able to review your needs and coordinate the transition to a more robust software package and ensure that the integrity of your bookkeeping is maintained. We’ve all heard horror stories about the move to new software and it doesn’t need to be that way. Having an experienced guide makes the transition go smoothly. No matter your situation, I can offer support with questions about troubleshooting or how to record specific types of transactions. This will maintain the accuracy of the information going into your bookkeeping file and ensure that the reporting you get is accurate and reliable.

Controller Services

Recent changes in accounting standards require separation between the maintenance of bookkeeping records and you, the Review engagement accountant. Historically much “file cleanup” was done on bookkeeping files prior to the Review engagement being completed and this meant there was the potential for the accountant doing the Review to be reviewing his own work. In CSRE 2400 the recommended Engagement Acceptance checklist questions data being unavailable or unreliable; “Based on preliminary understanding, is there any indication that the information needed to perform the engagement will be unavailable or unreliable?” This means that you cannot answer ”NO” and then have a large number of journal entries to clean up the bookkeeping. The bookkeeping needs to be available and reliable prior to the Review accountant receiving. I can provide that separation by going in and preparing the bookkeeping file for year-end. This enables you, the Review accountant to ensure independence from the bookkeeping transactions. As the company’s contract Controller, I can ensure that transactions are recorded appropriately, prepare or check reconciliations, and make any needed adjustments to get ready for the year-end to be completed. The types of tasks completed or the frequency that they are done would be client specific depending on the technical accounting knowledge of the staff, the volume of operations or transactions, or other needs as determined by discussion with the client. I look forward to providing clients with the expertise they need to ensure that you, the Review engagement accountant receives the reliable data you require.

Your Partner for Growth

MISSION: To partner with and positively impact small businesses and their owners by providing relevant, timely and accurate financial information and analysis so they can ensure financial integrity and longevity for the growth and enduring stability of their business.

When you hire me, you hire someone who understands where you are and what you need. I am in an excellent position to assist you because in addition to my accounting public practice experience, I have worked in industry as a Controller at several different companies and was a Junior Partner in a professional services corporation. I know the challenges that smaller companies face, like delayed financial statements that hinder you from being able to plan and record keeping errors that cost time and money to fix. I have been there on that side of the table and I know what you need from your external accountant. I have worked in a variety of industries spanning more than 25 years: construction, engineering consulting, not-for-profit, and public accounting, to name a few. I have implemented software transitions, oversaw inventory management, implemented and produced management reports for job costing, coordinated strategic planning, analyzed budgets to actual operational results, and managed human resources. All the behind the scenes work they didn’t teach you in school! I will help your business run more effectively which allows you the freedom to build your operations! Contact me today to learn how I can help you to achieve your goals.
